Species Richness Estimation

ثبت نشده
چکیده

Various models and estimation procedures for estimating the number of species in a community are reviewed under the following sampling schemes: sampling by continuous-type of efforts, sampling by individuals, and sampling by quadrats (or multiple occasions). Applications and relevant software are briefly reviewed.

Estimating species richness

Measuring species richness is an essential objective for many community ecologists and conservation biologists. The number of species in a local assemblage is an intuitive and natural index of community structure, and patterns of species richness have been measured at both small (e.g. Blake & Loiselle 2000) and large (e.g. Rahbek & Graves 2001) spatial scales. Many classic models in community e...

Bias, Precision, and Accuracy of Four Measures of Species Richness

Species richness is a widely used surrogate for the more complex concept of biological diversity. Because species richness is often central to ecological study and the establishment of conservation priorities, the biases and merits of richness measurements demand evaluation. The jackknife and bootstrap estimators can be used to compensate for the underestimation associated with simple richness ...

Limited sampling hampers “big data” estimation of species richness in a tropical biodiversity hotspot

Macro-scale species richness studies often use museum specimens as their main source of information. However, such datasets are often strongly biased due to variation in sampling effort in space and time. These biases may strongly affect diversity estimates and may, thereby, obstruct solid inference on the underlying diversity drivers, as well as mislead conservation prioritization. In recent y...

Scaling Disturbance Instead of Richness to Better Understand Anthropogenic Impacts on Biodiversity

A primary impediment to understanding how species diversity and anthropogenic disturbance are related is that both diversity and disturbance can depend on the scales at which they are sampled. While the scale dependence of diversity estimation has received substantial attention, the scale dependence of disturbance estimation has been essentially overlooked. Here, we break from conventional exam...

rich: An R Package to Analyse Species Richness

The paper describes rich, a new R package to perform species richness estimation and comparison. Species richness is the simplest surrogate for the more complex concept of species biodiversity. It is relatively easy to assess although estimations strongly depend on sampling intensity with the consequence that richness estimations should be standardized to perform valid comparisons. The R packag...

RICHEST ‐ a web server for richness estimation in biological data

UNLABELLED Richness is defined as the number of distinct species or classes in a sample or population. Although richness estimation is an important practice, it requires mathematical and computational methods that are challenging to understand and implement. We have developed a web server, RICHness ESTimator (RICHEST), which implements three non-parametric statistical methods for richness estim...
